Reconstituting Medication with filtering
Medication vial
Bacteriostatic Water
2x Alcohol wipes
1x 3mL Syringe
3x Sharp needles (25G 25mm)
EQUIPMENT
1x Syringe filter (13mm, 0.22um, PES)
1x Pen cartridge
1x Medication pen
1x Pen needle
1x Sharps container/bin
PREPARATION and CLEANING
1. Prepare a clean workspace free from dust and visible dirt.
2. Gather equipment.
3. Clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub/sanitiser (or soap and water).
4. Remove caps from bacteriostatic water and medication vials.
5. Wipe rubber stopper on each vial with an alcohol wipe for at least 30 seconds and allow alcohol to air dry evaporate. Avoid touching rubber stoppers after cleaning.
RECONSTITUTION
6. Open and attach first sharp needle to 3mL syringe. Avoid touching connecting parts of needle and syringe.
7. Insert needle into bacteriostatic water vial and draw up required volume into the syringe.
8. Remove the needle/syringe from the bacteriostatic vial.
9. Insert the needle into medication vial and inject bacteriostatic water.
10. Once medication is fully dissolved, draw solution back into the syringe.
FILTERING
11. Open sterile pen cartridge. Avoid touching cartridge opening.
12. Insert second sharp needle into the top of the pen cartridge (venting).
13. Open sterile syringe filter.
14. Remove first sharp needle from syringe. Avoid touching open end of syringe.
15. Attach syringe filter to syringe. Avoid touching connectors.
16. Attach third sharp needle to the outflow connector of the syringe filter.
17. Insert needle into the pen cartridge and slowly inject solution through syringe filter into the pen cartridge.
LOADING PEN
18. Load pen cartridge into reusable medication pen.
19. Attach pen needle and purge air from cartridge.
20. Remove pen needle for storage.
